The three things

Each morning, Jane and I pray together using our community prayer book, "A New Way of Living" (available on Amazon). We selected one of our daily meditations from Ed Sellner’s insightful 1993 book, "Wisdom of the Celtic Saints" (also linked below).

St. Ita, a sixth-century Irish holy woman, purportedly understood the mind of G*d, knowing both what God favors and  of what G*d disapproves. Whether her words truly reflect G*d’s is unknowable (how could we know?), but St. Ita's wisdom often resonates with truth for me.

This year, democratic elections are occurring in more countries worldwide than ever before, likely shaping global affairs for years to come. Europe appears to be leaning towards right-wing and populist movements. Britain's recent election shifted the country left of center, with the right split between a disorganized Conservative Party and a rising extreme right. France and Germany are also undergoing significant political shifts, leaning heavily rightward. In the United States, the November elections will determine our nation’s course, though the outcome remains uncertain. Certainly, the tone and rhetoric of recent years have been marked by hate and resentment.

Amidst this, St. Ita suggests that G*d values faithfulness, gratitude, and generosity, while disapproving of hatred, resentment, and the pursuit of wealth. Though not wanting to oversimplify, it seems humans project onto G*d both our loftiest ideals and deepest fears, some evolving over time, while others remain timeless. St. Ita’s wisdom strikes me as timeless, contrasting sharply with the fleeting nature of current political discourse. According to St. Ita, we may be heading in the wrong direction, and I hope we can alter our course. Conrasting St. Ita's timeless wisdom with today’s turbulent political landscape, it’s clear we face choices that define our values and direction. As we navigate these challenges, I hope we might heed St. Ita’s call for faithfulness and generosity, and strive to transcend divisive rhetoric for a more hopeful future.
