A Delightful Little Gem!

I have been enjoying a delightful little book by the stoic philosopher Epictetus. The book is the Enchiridion, or the Manual. It is a little guidebook for living. Epictetus was one of a handful of “pagan” writers who were approved reading in the early Christian church. Origen loved him and the Manual became an important resource for many monastic communities in the medieval period. It consists of 53 very short chapters full of wisdom. Here’s one little snippet from chapter five:

“It is not events that disturb people, it is their judgments concerning them.”

Another from chapter nine:

“Sickness is a problem for the body, not the mind—unless the mind decides that it is a problem.”

The Enchiridion is available in many editions from Amazon.com for as little as $2.50. Find a copy and enjoy!
