The Mundane—To be as Christ

New Year’s Day thoughts 2008

The mundane is day-to-day worldly life. There are occasional windows on the Reality that infuses all things. Yet, mostly our experience is of the mundane. Our community prayer is to “be as Christ to those we meet, to find Christ within them.” This is the daily, mundane being there for and with the folk we rub shoulders with.

How are we to be as Christ? As Christ is deep within each of us, as we are fully present for our friends, family and colleagues, then we are as Christ to them. We are fully present when we are centered, when we “touch the Christ within.” We center through practice.

There is a beautiful centering breath practice by Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh:

In breath: “Breathing in I calm my body.”
Out breath: “Breathing out I smile.”
In breath: Dwelling in the present moment.”
Out breath: “I know this is a wonderful moment.”

Or a short form:

Calming
Smiling
Present moment
Wonderful moment

Try it!

In 2008, the most important and precious thing we can do is practice, to be as Christ to those we meet, to find Christ within them.
