As we enter 2005 close on the heels of the Asian disaster, I sense a deeper call to prayer. Not the prayer of worry turned to pleading, nor the prayer of barely concealed activity: “Oh God, we are doing such and such, please come to bless us.”

It is the rhythm of prayer that turns along “being, listening, loving.”

Being—in the presence of God, Father-Mother. To be there is to pray truly. To be still. To cease from striving.

Listening—to the Spirit, Gentle promptings. Scarcely heard utterance. A profound silence. Listen instead of talking, chattering.

Loving—in response as Jesus loved. To love God, neighbor, enemy is to continue the cycle of prayer.
